Caffeine is found naturally in coffee beans, tea leaves (green, black, and white tea), cacao pods (chocolate), kola nuts (used in cola drinks), yerba mate and guarana plants. Caffeine molecule can also be created in a laboratory and added to products. This synthetic caffeine is chemically identical to natural caffeine. It is often added to energy drinks and sodas, over-the-counter pain relievers, weight-loss supplements and pre-workout fitness powders.

How Caffeine Works in Your Body?

While you’re doing especially hard jobs, a chemical called adenosine will build up in your brain, binding to special receptors and making you feel tired. Caffeine molecule has a similar shape to adenosine and it sneaks into those same receptors and blocks them. Because adenosine can’t bind those receptores anymore, you don’t feel sleepy. At the same time, caffeine increases the release of other brain chemicals like dopamine and adrenaline, which make you feel more energized and focused.

For most healthy adults, a moderate caffeine intake (about 400 mg per day, roughly 4 cups of coffee) can provide increased alertness and concentration, improved physical performance and endurance and enhanced short-term memory.
